With The Night Clerk, the filmmakers had all the raw materials they needed to create an edge-of-your-seat thriller: a reasonable budget, name actors, and an interesting premise. Somehow, they missed every opportunity to capitalize while still managing an at least somewhat watchable movie.
The plot centers on Bart Bromley, a voyeuristic hotel desk clerk with Asperger's Syndrome who works the midnight shift. Bromley, played by Tye Sheridan (who also produces the film) becomes the hapless focus of a murder investigation. While Sheridan delivers a seemingly astute portrayal of a young man on the spectrum, The Night Clerk unfortunately reads as little more than an excuse for him to play what could have been a challenging role with a better written script and a bit more vision.
Bromley's character, rather than serving merely as a caricature of a good kid with autism, could have been the linchpin for the dramatic tension necessary to make a truly good film. Had he been faced with greater conflict (an innocent man enduring a robust murder investigation) or had he been required to overcome his challenges to do something extraordinary (rescue his love interest from a malignant murderer) the film would have been vastly more interesting.
A tired Ana de Armas plays Andrea, a deceitful mistress with a heart of gold. Unfortunately, she doesn't remain sympathetic. Rather, she inexplicably reverts to type: the conscience-free, home wrecking mean girl who's content to allow an "Aspie" to suffer a tragic miscarriage of justice in order to protect a malevolent, abusive paramour. It's too bad. Andrea could have been an interesting character had she been less cliche.
Likewise, quality actors Helen Hunt and John Leguizamo are not very engaged. That's understandable, given the script provides them little with which to work.
Had Hunt been afforded the chance to develop her character beyond Bromley's overprotective mother into a mother who harbors at least a little doubt about her son's innocence, it would have provided much needed internal conflict and an interesting subplot to make her character substantive.
Leguizamo's Detective Espada is yet another disappointment. He is so utterly lazy and devoid of curiosity, he rushes to judgment about Bromley's guilt without even a cursory exploration of other possibilities. As a main character, he's neither hero nor antihero, and sadly, the movie is content to leave it that way. No wonder Leguizamo seems bored.
Worst of all is The Night Clerk's failure to respect those with autism. This rare opportunity to foster greater understanding and to portray a more realistic, positive image is wholly squandered. The film protests the stereotype that those with Asperger's are unintelligent, while simultaneously playing Bromley as a stooge and a patsy. Everyone wants to see positive portrayals of themselves in film. In no way is this character one whom those on the spectrum can look to as inspiration. That's unfortunate, because had the filmmakers taken that approach, it would have made for a much better thriller.
